Winter Fun

We have had a few snow days over the last couple of weeks, but we are back in the swing of things. This week we began our unit on Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. Our teacher can hardly believe it, but we can tell the story ourselves using our storyteller figurines. So far we have read, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It is something to see. Hopefully, we will be able to share some stories with you soon.

Our last Sound of the Week was /J/ with Owen. He brought in items such as jewelry, jam, jet, jeep, Jedi, a Jesus book and a Jonah book, photos of Jupiter, a jacket, and juice. Our list of other words that begin with the /j/ had words like Jake, jamboree, jump rope, jelly bean, jaguar, January, jar, jungle, jump, July, Japan, joke, junk, just, jersey, etc. We read the Alphatales book, Jaguar's Jungleberry Jamboree, and sang along to a clip of ABC Mouse's letter J song. Our craft activity was making jellyfish. We had a lot of fun painting and gluing.

We were also able to complete our S/Z sound sort this week. I believe we are getting the hang of this.

In Math we continued working on perfecting our ABA pattern, and began on our weekly Counting Jar. This will help us with counting with accuracy and one to one correspondence, as well as identifying numerals and matching them with their quantities.

The highlight of our week, for certain, was our field trip to the Ice Rink! We got to try on some cool hockey gear and learned a lot about hockey from Coach Jason. We also got to check out the fabulous facility, see a Zamboni transform to empty the water and ice that was inside, and best of all, we got to skate on the ice. Some of us were so good at skating that we needed very little help from the friendly staff members.

Please take a look at our Life Skills page for last week's lesson.

Snow, snow, SNOW!!!

As the snow has started to melt away, we have been enjoying ourselves making snowmen (or at least trying to), making snow angels, sledding, and just rolling down hills, having a great time. Keeping up with, putting on, and taking off the "Magic 5" has proven to be very time consuming! However, we have had such a great time when out in the snow.

Fun in the snow!

Sledding!

Before the big snow, we started prepping boxes and materials to make our rocket ship. Mixing black and white paint to make gray, we started painting. It was a lot of fun. We will extend our theme of Outer Space for another week or two.

Our last Sound of the Week was with Lucey. She introduced us to the /Zz/ sound. Lucey brought in items from home such as a zipper, a zig-zag, a zebra, Zoe (from Sesame Street), a zero, a Ziploc bag, a Zookeeper, and photos of Zeus and a zoo. We read the AlphaTales book, Zack the Lazy Zebra, and brainstormed all of the words we could think of that begin with the letter Z. We came up with zucchini, zip, ziti, zing, zoom, zippity, zinnia, zinc, Zachary, zest, zillion, and zap. We later created our own "Zebra in the Zoo" as well as participated in other fun activities.

In math this week, we have been working on a new pattern. This pattern is a little tricky because although it has 3 letters, there are only 2 variables. This new pattern is ABA. When using the Unifix cubes to create this pattern, we have to choose two colors. It was a little challenging when we were working by ourselves, but after being put into pairs, we found it to be a bit easier.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

During science this week, we did an experiment with snow and our five senses. Well, technically four of the five senses...we did not actually "taste" the snow. We went outside to gather snow in a bowl and brought it back inside for observation. Here are some words we came up with to describe the snow, according to our senses:

Smells like: dirt, chemicals, good
Looks like: Rose's boots (not too sure what this means!), crystals, a mountain, sparkles inside
Sounds like: nothing, egg cracking
Feels like: cold, bumpy

We went to the Art Barn this week to glaze bowls for the Empty Bowl project. Kate talked to us about the good deed we were doing to help others, as well as the amount of children that may go hungry every night because of a lack of food.

Ibou's Family Share!

Next week we will continue to work on ABA patterns and wrap up our Outer Space unit (Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes is up next). We will have a new Sound of the Week and will continue to review the letters and sounds we have already covered.
